Comet Old Timers Still Got The Hustle

A large enthusiastic crowd was not disappointed as the former boys of spring put on a very entertaining and spirited ballgame.  The Comet veterans were divided into even and odd (year of graduation) squads and a 7 inning game was played with a few minor revisions of the rules.

When the dust settled the "evens", scoring 2 runs in the bottom of the seventh, defeated the "odds" 9-8.

The  weekend activities were scheduled as a part of the Reed-Custer High School Homecoming.  The fun kicked off Friday evening, October 7th, with an informal social at Jones-eez on Kennedy Road in Braidwood..  The meet and greet took place after the Comets' Homecoming football game.  On Saturday, October 8th an informal golf scramble was held at the Silver Oaks golf Club at the Braidwood Recreation club.  Former Comet, Jeff Saltzman headed up the event  The Old Timers' game took place at Comet Park on Sunday, October 9th at 2:00 PM.

Current Comet Head Coach Jerry Cougill and his staff organized the weekend and were pleased with the results.  "To be honest, we were worried we would not have a good turnout.  We had a lot of positive feedback from our inaugural game last year, but our advance sign-ups were lagging behind what we thought they would be.  However, in the last days of the signups, a lot of guys came forward and we ended up having a nice turnout.  The weather was great, nobody got hurt and everyone had a lot of laughs.  Everyone agreed, the guys played very well."

Cougill continued, "We want to thank the Braidwood ambulance crew, including Chief Ken Heberer and Deputy Chief, Scott Favero for coming out to give us some back up, as well as John Jasper, Ray Odom and Diane Costain for their technical help at the game.  We also want to thank Red Folkestad and Joe Spiezio for serving as honorary base umpires and Chris Irvin and Adam Satorius for umpiring the plate and bases.  We also appreciate the RCHS Athletic Boosters for running the concession stand."

"We definitely plan to make this a tradition during Homecoming weekend and are looking forward to making the event bigger and better.  It is a good thing for Comet Baseball and a good thing for RCHS."

During the contest the following awards were presented.
